Scholarships

What makes you stand out? Maybe it’s your passion for starting your own business after graduation. Maybe it’s the work you are doing, even now, to empower a diverse community of Christ-followers. Whatever it is, we want to see you move forward. MU scholarships and awards are awarded based on different backgrounds, pursuits, and more.

Scholarships are gift aid, meaning they don’t need to be repaid. Explore your options and eligibility for Multnomah scholarships and awards in the tabs below.

You must be admitted to Multnomah with an official Athletic offer before a Financial Aid offer is made. A student’s athletic aid offer encompasses their full institutional aid eligibility.

Grants

Federal grants do not need to be paid back. Most federal and state grants are based on your level of financial need determined by the results of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Multnomah-controlled grants will be reduced if students’ total gift aid from all sources exceeds the financial aid budget for tuition, fees, room, board, books, and supplies. If you have any questions about this policy and how it could impact your financial aid, please contact your financial aid counselor.

The Multnomah University Grant will not be available for our student athletes and online students.

Loans

Student loans let you borrow money to help pay for your education. The repayment of educational loans varies so be aware of the type of loan you are borrowing. Because loans must be repaid, you should plan your borrowing carefully.

If you are borrowing for the first time as a Multnomah University student planning to utilize Federal Direct Stafford loans, complete the following:

  • Visit studentaid.gov and sign in using your FSA ID
    • “Complete Entrance Counseling” by selecting the appropriate link
    • “Complete Master Promissory Note” by selecting the appropriate link
  • Visit the Federal Student Aid webpage for more information.

If you are a PARENT borrower planning to utilize Federal Direct PLUS loans, please review the Parent PLUS Loan information below.

Certain banks and financial institutions offer private student loans that can help bridge the gap between federal student aid, grants, and scholarships through Multnomah, and the remaining balance owed. Although benefits may be similar to federal loans, such as deferred payments while students are enrolled, these lenders may require a credit check and/or cosigner and will vary on interest rates, loan origination fees, and other factors. Private student loans are separate from federal student loans, and students should assess their eligibility for federal student loans for more favorable provisions.

Financial Aid Resources

The Student Guide is a comprehensive resource on student financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education. Grants, loans, and work-study are the three major forms of aid available through the Department’s Federal Student Aid office.

FSA ID Request and Information allows the student (and parent, if applicable) to create a unique and secure means to access your personal information on the Department of Education systems. The FSA ID is used to electronically sign the FAFSA application and loan application, as well as to retrieve loan history and total loan debt through a national database (NSLDS).

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) establishes federal financial aid eligibility, as well as private funding from many colleges and universities.

Student Employment

Many Multnomah students work on campus to help with their college expenses.

Some students are offered work-study as part of their financial aid packages.

Even if you’re not offered work-study, you may still get a job on campus. Students work a variety of jobs – from monitoring the gym or helping out with maintenance to serving coffee in Roger’s Café.

After you apply for aid through Multnomah and complete your FAFSA, you’ll receive your financial aid package letting you know if you qualify for work-study.

The amount of work-study you’re offered reflects your earning potential over the course of the academic year. What you earn will depend on your pay rate and the number of hours you work throughout the year.

Campus jobs pay the minimum wage and you can work up to 20 hours per week. Typical annual earnings range from $1,300-2,500. Earnings through work are paid directly to the student.

Next Steps: Find a job on campus.

Student employment is currently not available as a form of aid for online students.

Military Benefits

Multnomah University is an approved institution for veterans or their dependents to use the education benefits available to them. Benefits may include a monthly housing allowance (MHA), a book stipend, and/or payment for tuition and fees. For specific information on the benefits you qualify for, please visit the VA’s website. If you have questions regarding using your education benefits on the Portland campus, please contact the Office of the Registrar to speak with the VA School Certifying Official (SCO).

Yellow Ribbon Program: Multnomah is a participating institution in the Yellow Ribbon program. If you are eligible for benefits at the 100% rate, the Yellow Ribbon program is an additional benefit, which pays for tuition and fees in excess of the yearly benefit cap. Currently, we do not limit the number of student-veterans eligible for the Yellow Ribbon program.

Office of the Registrar and the Department of Veterans Affairs are here to help you through the process:
